Standard Bank has set the hype for the quarter-final matches scheduled for this weekend by presenting Adidas uniforms worth about K4 million to all eight teams.

Speaking at the symbolic presentation yesterday, the bank’s marketing executive Madalitso Jonazi said the donation was a fulfilment of their obligation under the knockout cup.

“We want to raise the spirits ahead of the quarter-finals, especially for the teams and players who will go on the pitch looking smart.

“Football is about excitement and fun and we hope it will inspire the teams,” said Jonazi.

He reminded the clubs and supporters to conduct themselves properly and accept any upturn in results responsibly.

“Standard Bank has a long history of sports sponsorship. We must, therefore, reiterate our firm stand against acts of violence which do not add any value, but instead retard the game. Let’s go to the stadium to enjoy the games and together, we shall move forward,” added Jonazi.

With Kamuzu Barracks [KB] and Moyale’s qualification into the quarter-finals on Wednesday, the top-eight line-up of the K25 million showpiece is now complete.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) competitions officer Gomezgani Zakazaka hailed the bank for the presentation.

“The six teams that earned automatic qualification by virtue of finishing in the top six of the Super League last season, will be presented with the kits today [yesterday] while KB and Moyale will get theirs on Saturday morning,” said Zakazaka.

Tomorrow, Civo United will host Big Bullets at Civo Stadium under new coach Oscar Kaunda while Blantyre United will take on Silver Strikers at Kalulu Stadium in Nchalo.

On Sunday, KB will face Moyale at Civo Stadium while Red Lions will take on defending champions Mighty Wanderers in Balaka.

Out of the eight teams, only Wanderers, Silver and Moyale have won the cup before.

For the love of pool

“Most local pool lovers struggle to find money to buy tokens for their favourite game.  In Malawi, the game is mostly played in leisure places such as bars and some people have reservations to patronise these places because they do not have extra money for a drink.  Some youths in Area 49 Dubai in Lilongwe have come up with a solution to headaches caused by the above problems. They have invented a pool table from locally made materials which does not require players to buy tokens. The pool table in the picture can be easily be relocated to any place where it is convenient for the players.
